Historie tohoto zahájení, resp. tahu 1...b5 (v reakci na 1.d4) sahá až do období těsně před 1. světovou válkou. Do praxe ho zavedl tehdejší polský mistr a známý teoretik Alexander Wagner (1868–1942). Stalo se tak v roce 1913, kdy se Alexander Wagner utkal v rámci 10. Mistrovství Švýcarska v korespondenčním šachu s Rudolfem Kühnem, klubovým šampionem ze Saské Kamenice (Chemnitz), a na soupeřův úvodní tah 1.d4 odpověděl právě 1...b5. O rok později pak Alexander Wagner zveřejnil své rozsáhlé rozbory tohoto pokračování v šachovém periodiku "Deutsches Wochenschach und Berliner Schachzeitung" (30. ročník/svazek, Postupim 1914).
