FIDE GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda wins the FIDE World Cup 2021!Friday, August 6, 2021: JKD is a participant of the Platinum ICCF Jubilee tournament for the world's top chess players.
The 2021 FIDE World Cup was a 206-player knockout taking place in Krasnaya Polyana, near Sochi, Russia from July 12 to August 6.
The finalists also qualified for the 2022 Candidates Tournament. The top 50 players, who include world nos 1 and 2 Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, were seeded directly into Round 2. Each match consistsed of two classical games where the players have 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment from move 1. If tied, a playoff was held on the 3rd day. There were two 25+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 10+10 games, then two 5+3, and finally an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers were allowed until after move 30.
The tournament was won by Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL), ahead of Sergey Karjakin (RUS) and Magnus Carlsen (NOR).
