João Carlos de Oliveira, best Latin American chess player in activity, dies at 70.

João Carlos de Oliveira (ID 70330), Brazilian chess grandmaster, best Latin American in activity (achieved the 26th in May, 2005), died on Sunday in São Paulo. He was 70 and was fighting against a cancer since October 2021. He was surrounded by his family and friends as he transcended peacefully.

João Carlos was born on December 9, 1952, in São Paulo, Brazil. His father worked for a bank and his mother was a teacher.

In ICCF since 2002, he learned to play chess at the age of 13, with a friend from high school and since then continued to progress at chess, becoming grand master in 2009. He was also an industrial maintenance engineer and physicist and like chess, he used to play piano and tennis in his free time.

He is survived by his wife and son and let many chess friends that he did around the world during his career.
